The government of Hugo Chavez has recently launched an aggressive campaign to get Venezuela onto the UN Security Council. There is currently one “Latin American” seat up for grabs, and Chavez is obviously keen to score it, as it will give him yet another forum to loudly rally against the evils of Yankee imperialism.
As of now, voting has been deadlocked. Half the General Assembly seems to support Venezuela, while the other half, led by the US and its allies, is backing Guatemala. The next round of voting is scheduled for Thursday, but the stalemate could potentially drag on for much longer.
