Well, Stephane Dion has agreed to step down as leader of the Liberal Party, and understandably so. In this recent election the Libs only got 26% of the popular vote — their worst showing since Canada’s modern founding in 1867. Stephane Dion will also go down in history as only the second Liberal leader who never got a chance to serve as prime minister for at least a brief period; the other guy was Edward Blake back in the late 1800’s.
Of course, the Liberals still won 76 seats, which ain’t that bad. Their worst ever showing in that regard was in 1984, when they only won 40 seats under the unpopular John Turner (Prime Minister, July-September).
